There’s a powerful moment in Top Gun 2 when Ice (Val Kilmer) types a message to Maverick (Tom Cruise): “It’s time to let go.”
Maverick responds, “I don’t know how.”
It’s so powerful because we’ve all been there, right? I certainly have.
And yet, letting go is a requirement of moving forward. But to Maverick’s point, many of us don’t know how.
It’s why I want to offer a simple exercise to try that I call “Letting So for Letting Go.”
Letting So simply means acknowledging what has happened and then asking some So questions:
So, what do I do now?
So, what is my best, next step?
So, how can I become a healthier version of me?
So, who could I talk to?
So, if you were me, what would you do?
Letting these So questions in the middle of your pain won’t make things easier, but it will provide some clarity.
This is part of the reason we get stuck. We can’t see past the pain or complexity of the situation which makes it hard to let go.
When you let “so questions” have a chance, even if it’s just a conversation, you’ll not only discover some clarity, you might also experience some hope.
Letting So for Letting Go.
